Johnny Depp is well-known for his role as Captain Jack Sparrow in the Pirates of the Caribbean film series.
The last Pirates of the Caribbean film was released in 2017, and a sixth film was announced not long after.
Some fans hoped the Disney films would bring Jack Sparrow's story but Depp's continuing court struggle with his ex-wife, "Aquaman" actress Amber Heard, has hampered his participation.
Following the allegations against him, The Hollywood Reporter stated that Depp would not be returning to the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise in the future.
Film producer Jerry Bruckheimer stated that two scripts for "POTC6" are in the works, neither of which features Depp... at least for the time being.
There's no way of knowing how the Depp v. Heard defamation trial will effect Depp's participation in a new Pirates of the Caribbean film as it nears its conclusion.
At this time, the only conclusive explanation is that he is no longer associated with the project. And it's possible that he doesn't want to be in that situation.
