On social media, Shah Rukh Khan unveiled his next project, which is a collaboration with acclaimed filmmaker Rajkumar Hirani. Even towards the end of the announcement trailer, when the title of the film is revealed, a large group of people is seen wandering through a desert, ostensibly attempting to cross a border while a jet flies above them. The look suggests Dunki movie is based on Donkey Flight.

Rajkumar Hirani, Abhijit Joshi, and Kanika Dhillon wrote the screenplay. The film is a collaboration of JIO Studios, Red Chillies Entertainment, and Rajkumar Hirani Films.
