Jessica Chastain may have entered the Marvel universe with “Dark Phoenix,” but the Oscar winner insists that the upcoming true crime thriller on Netflix “The Good Nurse” will be her first true superhero film.
The thriller, which will be available on Netflix this fall, is based on Charles Graeber’s 2013 book “The Good Nurse: A True Story of Medicine, Madness, and Murder.” Danish director Tobias Lindholm (“Mindhunter”) made it.
Redmayne and Chastain, both Oscar winners, underwent physical changes for their respective roles. Chastain performed a feat of method acting by always wearing an earpiece that allowed her to hear the heartbeat of her character, Loughren, who had a heart issue. According to Vanity Fair, Chastain would request that the volume be increased when Loughren’s health was in jeopardy due to her physically demanding job.
Redmayne practiced the “spider-like” technique for Cullen with the help of movement coach Alexandra Reynolds. Redmayne and Reynolds previously worked together on his Academy Award-winning portrayal of Stephen Hawking in “The Theory of Everything.”
In order to prepare for their roles, Chastain and Redmayne also attended “nurse school” and chatted with Loughren.
“The Good Nurse,” according to director Lindholm, is not just another horrifying true crime story; rather, it asks why a medical practitioner was allowed to kill people on purpose for such a long time.
Lindholm said, “When I read the novel, I knew it wasn’t just another serial-killer movie. It was a portrayal of both the nurse who managed to stop the serial killer and a system that failed to do so.
The chilling actual story of serial killer nurse Charles Cullen (Eddie Redmayne), who operated in New Jersey and Pennsylvania for 16 years and killed up to 400 people, is told in “The Good Nurse,” Cullen admitted to killing up to 40 people and is presently serving 17 consecutive life sentences in jail for his crimes. He killed patients by giving them lethal amounts of insulin and other potentially lethal medications.

Amy Loughren (Chastain), a nurse colleague of Cullen’s, ultimately assisted in his capture. After police looked into an unusual death at the hospital where they both worked, Loughren developed a suspicion for Cullen.
